Hello Take Shape for Lifers,
I wear a duty belt to work. I wear it for 40 hours per week and on busy weeks I may wear it for 60 or more hours. The duty belt and my bullet-almost-proof vest weighs a total of 22 lbs. which is carried all day, every day. The belt has tools just like the tools of a construction worker. We are trained to use the right tool for the job. If we use the wrong tool it may cost us our life or our job. Our tools must work properly and we must be proficient at using them. If we aren't, the consequence is the same. Life or job.
I don't mean to sound dire is drawing a comparison between an officer's job and your health, but when people use exercise as their tool to lose weight, they are using the wrong tool. Saying that it may cost a person their life may seem extreme, but it is a plausible consideration for those of us that are excessively overweight or struggling with ailments brought on by our poor eating and lifestyle choices.
Exercise IS an excellent tool for building strength, cardio endurance, toning, agility etc., but it is not the tool of choice for losing weight. In some of my prior blog entries I discussed the shear volume of exercise that is required to burn small amounts of calories, such as what's in a Frappucino. Last week a client and I ran for nearly an hour. Our estimated caloric burn....400 calories. "Whoo Hoo", I said. "You just earned yourself a Frapuccino!" Is it really worth all the effort?
If you answer, "no", I'm with you! If your focus is losing weight and keeping it off, then you must use the right tool. The tool is healthy eating and habits of health.
