Your 10,000 Year Old Instinct

Hello Everyone!  As many of you know, I've done personal training since 2006.  While going through the course offered by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, which I believe is the most comprehensive personal training program currently offered, I was a bit disheartened to see that only 65 pages out of the 728 pages of text was focused on nutrition.  This past summer I discovered Take Shape for Life (TSFL) after my wife began the program.  I didn't know a thing about it, other than the fact that my wife was melting away before my eyes and she was really looking good!  I thought that I wanted to lose some of my flubber too. The summer was quickly approaching and I wanted to lose it fast and safely.  She referred me to this book (shown above) that her TSFL Health Coach had loaned her.  I began to read it and the first thing that caught my attention was Chapter One.  The doctor basically said it's not your fault that you're fat.  "Yeah right", I thought.  Nice gimmick.  But as I read, I realized that this doctor was on to something....of course we crave fattening foods, sweets and anything else that tastes good, no matter how unhealthy it is.  It's our instinct.  Dr. Anderson goes on to explain that 10,000 years ago no one was obese or had heart disease.  The mere act of getting food was a struggle.  So when we found a batch of wild grapes or vegetables, we ate it on the spot.  We ate all of it.  As much as our stomach could bear.  We never knew when we'd eat again.  We were programmed to preserve every calorie we could ingest.

This instinct is still with us.   Dr. Andersen wrote that he once heard someone say that they were watching TV and ate a whole pint of ice cream, to which he thinks, "Well, of course you did".  Our bodies are programmed to eat as much as we can and the fat cells are likewise programmed to squeeze out and store every calorie possible.  I think he's right when he says, "It's not your fault".

Today I attended a Take Shape for Life (TSFL) conference in Portland and the main speaker was Dr. Wayne Andersen (shown on the book cover).  After years of being a heart surgeon and making good money, he grew weary of seeing  unhealthy patients come in, only to return to their old unhealthy lifestyles.  After a lot of heartache, he realized that he needed to see these patients before they got to the operating room.  He quoted Thomas Edison in saying, "The doctor of the future will use no medicine".  He eventually quit the life of a heart surgeon and he started TSFL where he authored the Habits of Health book.  This book is full of life-changing information that will help you to lose weight and not gain it back!

Here are just a a few of his tidbits that I remember him mentioning at today's conference:
Don't wear elastic pants.  A study showed that people who wear pants with an elastic waistband are more likely to gain weight.

After completing medical school and working as a heart surgeon, he believes that he is now more effective and life-changing with the TSFL program than he ever was as a surgeon.

As a surgeon, he felt that he was merely prolonging the dying process.  With TSFL he hopes to reach these people before their body hits the operating table.
After reading this book and getting certified as a TSFL Health Coach, I realized that I had a powerful tool to use along with my personal training background.  Two powerful tools in the quest for optimal health.  You don't have to be a personal trainer or TSFL Health Coach to have this awesome information at your fingertips.  This book is sold at Borders, Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com or via my website http://www.mojoefitness.com/ (and then click Take Shape for Life to get to the store).

I don't make any $$ from your order.  I'm sure the doctor does, but this doesn't trickle down to me!  Know my words are true...I'm just sharing some good information that I think can greatly benefit anyone who cares about their health.  For those of you that live nearby, I have an extra copy of the book that I'd be glad to loan out.
